MELBOURNE: Owen Farrell is set to extend his illustrious career when he faces the Wallabies this Saturday, having been named on the bench by his father, Andy Farrell, for the British and Irish Lions. The 33-year-old did not initially make the touring squad but has made a notable impact since joining as a replacement for the injured Elliot Daly, contributing in two significant matches.

This marks Farrell’s fourth tour with the Lions, and he stands as the second highest point scorer in Test rugby history. His recent performance against the First Nations and Pasifika XV, where he led his team to a 24-19 victory, particularly caught the attention of Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt. Schmidt highlighted Farrell’s leadership abilities, noting his knack for guiding the team and adapting strategically during play.

Farrell is expected to bring vital experience off the bench, with the versatility to play both fly-half and inside centre. Following a potential injury concern for Marcus Smith, Owen’s arrival on the bench is seen as a sensible move, especially with Fin Smith’s commendable role in their last match.

The Lions have made a solitary change to their starting backline, with Bundee Aki stepping in for the injured Sione Tuipulotu. Other adjustments include the inclusion of Ollie Chessum to partner skipper Maro Itoje due to Joe McCarthy’s absence through injury, while Andrew Porter is set to replace Ellis Genge at loosehead, forming an entirely Irish front row.

Joining Farrell on the bench, Welsh player Jac Morgan returns to the squad after a notable absence last week. Andy Farrell acknowledged that despite their strong position from the first Test, a significant response from the Wallabies is anticipated. The Wallabies are facing pressure to secure a win to stay competitive in the three-match series.

Historically, the Lions have faced challenges in Melbourne, having entered the second Test with leads during their tours in 2001 and 2013, only to lose both. In 2001, Australia ultimately seized the series with a triumph in Sydney, while the Lions clinched a decider in 2013.

As anticipation builds, both teams are aware of the stakes, with the Lions keen to improve upon their past performances and the Wallabies desperate for a victory to keep their series hopes alive.
