On day three of the second Test in Galle, Angelo Mathews’ dismissal left Sri Lanka in a difficult position as he looked set for a century, scoring 76 before attempting a risky shot against Nathan Lyon. His decision to go over square leg backfired, resulting in a catch to Beau Webster, and proved to be a turning point in the match. Following Mathews’ exit, Sri Lanka’s innings deteriorated rapidly, slipping from 5-198 to 8-211 by stumps, with Australia having already established a lead of 157 runs after being bowled out for 414.

The morning session saw a dismal start for Sri Lanka at 3-39, and even though Mathews formed a partnership with Kusal Mendis, their efforts went in vain after Mathews’ careless dismissal. Sri Lanka’s batting continued to falter, with Ramesh Mendis and Prabath Jayasuriya falling shortly after. Commentators suggested that Mathews’ lapse in judgement might have been a result of the intense Galle heat. With Australia firmly on track for victory, former player Greg Blewett noted their close proximity to wrapping up the series.
