Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has expressed his deep sorrow following the tragic death of Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, in a car accident in Spain. The incident occurred on Thursday when their Lamborghini veered off the road in Zamora due to a tyre blowout, subsequently igniting. Both Liverpool FC and FC Penafiel confirmed the unfortunate news.
In an official statement, Liverpool FC conveyed their devastation and appealed for privacy for the families, friends, and teammates of the deceased. Klopp, who managed Jota from 2020 to 2024, took to Instagram to share his grief: “This is a moment where I struggle. I’m heartbroken to hear about the passing of Diogo and his brother Andre.” He described Jota as not only an exceptional player but also a treasured friend and family man, extending his thoughts and prayers to Jota’s wife, children, and loved ones.
Cristiano Ronaldo, Jota’s teammate for Portugal, also paid tribute, lamenting the untimely loss. “It doesn’t make sense. We were just together with the national team,” Ronaldo posted. He sent condolences to Jota’s family and offered strength in their time of need.
Other players from Liverpool and the Portuguese national team, including Nunez and Ruben Neves, shared emotional messages on social media, reflecting on the unbearable pain of loss and vowing to remember Jota fondly. Several Premier League clubs, including Manchester United and Manchester City, have expressed their condolences as well.
Wolverhampton Wanderers, Jota’s former club, described him as cherished by fans and teammates alike, stating, “The memories he created will never be forgotten. You will be truly missed and always remembered.”
In a gesture of respect, the Portuguese Football Federation has requested a minute’s silence at all matches in the Women’s European Championship over the following days. Furthermore, Liverpool has lowered the flag at Anfield to half-mast as fans gather to pay their respects and leave tributes at the stadium.
