Iran has responded to recent US strikes on its nuclear facilities by targeting Al Udeid Air Base, a significant military installation in Qatar, which acts as a key hub for American forces in the region. Following the attack, President Donald Trump reassured that no American personnel were harmed and claimed the damage was minimal.

Currently, approximately 40,000 US service members are stationed in the Middle East, with many deployed on naval vessels as part of a strategic forces enhancement amid escalating tensions between Israel and Iran. In anticipation of potential Iranian retaliation, military bases across the Middle East are on heightened alert, and the Pentagon has relocated military aircraft and warships to the area.

The US maintains a widespread military presence in the region across several countries, including Qatar, Bahrain, Iraq, Israel, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Syria, and the UAE. Al Udeid Air Base specifically plays a crucial role, hosting thousands of American personnel and serving as a vital staging ground for operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. At its peak, it accommodated around 10,000 troops, a figure which decreased to around 8,000 by 2022.

Located roughly 30km southwest of Doha, Al Udeid serves as the forward headquarters for the US Central Command and has seen substantial investment over the years, amounting to about $12 billion to enhance its capabilities. This facility was previously regarded with caution due to its strategic significance.

Recently, President Trump made a historic visit to Al Udeid, marking the first visit by a sitting US president in over two decades. In light of recent conflicts, the base has implemented precautionary measures, including the relocation of various aircraft in preparation for potential strikes. Observations from satellite imagery have revealed that the base’s tarmacs were largely cleared prior to the US air assaults on Iranian nuclear assets, highlighting a military strategy aimed at protecting resources from possible attacks.
