A rescue mission is currently in progress for Lithuanian rower Aurimus Mockus, who has been caught in Tropical Cyclone Alfred while attempting to row solo from San Diego to Australia. Mockus embarked on this challenge in September of the previous year, partly to honour the Ukrainian victims of the ongoing Russian invasion.

As he approached his anticipated arrival point in Queensland, Mockus activated his emergency beacon, signalling his distress. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) reported that the incident occurred on Friday night, noting that the conditions were perilous with wind speeds reaching 100 km/h and intense seas.

In response, AMSA quickly deployed search and rescue aircraft, including a maritime patrol plane from the Royal Australian Air Force. They were successful in establishing radio communication with Mockus, assuring that he was being assisted. Additionally, the Royal Australian Navy has sent the HMAS Choules to aid in his rescue efforts.

Mockus’s journey reflects not only his adventurous spirit but also his solidarity with those impacted by conflict, as he navigates the formidable challenges of the Pacific Ocean amidst severe weather conditions.
