Liberal candidate Amelia Hamer has responded to criticism regarding her status as a landlord, following revelations that she owns two properties outside Victoria, contrary to her portrayal as a renter during her campaign. While visiting North Balwyn to announce a funding pledge, Hamer expressed her awareness of rising rental costs, asserting that many Australians can both rent and own property simultaneously.

“I think the reality is people acknowledge you can be both,” Hamer stated, emphasising her interactions with over 10,000 constituents who have shared their experiences of renting and home ownership challenges. Hamer clarified that her housing situation does not alienate her from voters, stating, “You can see both sides of the coin and empathise with different people’s experiences.”

At 31, and related to former premier Sir Rupert Hamer, Amelia faces the task of reclaiming Kooyong, a seat previously held by former Treasurer Josh Frydenberg. The electorate, traditionally a Liberal stronghold, flipped to teal independent Dr Monique Ryan in the 2022 federal election, highlighting its diverse demographic that includes wealthy residents as well as younger renters.

With the upcoming federal election seen as a vital test for the Liberal Party’s future, Dr Zareh Ghazarian from Monash University noted, “If they want any chance of forming government, they must win this seat.” Hamer’s failure to secure Kooyong could lead to challenges for the Liberal Party in future elections.

As the campaign unfolds, Hamer has welcomed the Opposition Leader Peter Dutton to join her in community engagements. Meanwhile, Dr Ryan aims to defend her slim margin in the face of new electoral boundaries that shift the demographic towards more conservative areas. This election is crucial for the teal movement, with successful candidates potentially solidifying their presence in Australian politics. If they falter, it could signify that the previous election was largely influenced by sentiments towards the Liberal Party rather than the independents.

Despite initial controversies, Ghazarian believes they will not heavily impact voting decisions. Local residents, including lifelong Liberal supporter Howard Kiel, indicated their continued support for Hamer despite her missteps. Overall, voters seem focused on broader party policies rather than individual candidate gaffes, suggesting that campaign issues will take precedence in their decision-making during the election.
