Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt is set to have a crucial meeting with Taniela Tupou as the experienced prop navigates a challenging patch in his rugby career. At 29 and with 58 Tests under his belt, Tupou is expected to be in his prime as a formidable tighthead. Off the field, he feels comfortable at the NSW Waratahs, but his on-pitch performance has been troubling, prompting a candid discussion in a recent interview with The Sydney Morning Herald.
Tupou expressed his doubts regarding his selection for the upcoming Wallabies clash against the British and Irish Lions, stating he feels overly nervous and disconnected from the game. “Sometimes, I just finish the match and wonder if I even know how to play rugby anymore,” he admitted. Meanwhile, ACT Brumbies captain Allan Alaalatoa appears to be in fine form, possibly securing the starting No.3 jersey for the first Lions Test on July 19.
Schmidt, drawing on his extensive coaching experience, is eager to help Tupou overcome these hurdles. “He’s a very likable young man, and I want the best for him,” Schmidt noted, recalling glimpses of improved performance during Tupou’s recent outing against the Queensland Reds. He highlighted that the prop seemed unlucky during scrums, missing out on deserved recognition for his efforts.
Schmidt has enlisted the help of Wallabies scrum expert Mike Cron, who spent time with Tupou and the Waratahs recently. The camaraderie between them is strong, and Schmidt emphasised their shared responsibility in communicating with the players. Waratahs coach Dan McKellar praised Tupou’s recent performance, labelling it as his best of the season, particularly applauding the celebration from teammates when he scored a try.
McKellar was impressed by Tupou’s willingness to discuss his struggles openly, which he believes can foster growth. He stated confidently that if Tupou continues to play like he did against the Reds, it may boost his confidence for the upcoming tour against the Lions, where scrum performance will be crucial.
Overall, Schmidt remains optimistic about Tupou’s prospects, urging him to simplify his approach and not overthink his game. Discussions continue as the coaching team seeks to support him in returning to form, with signs of improvement providing a hopeful outlook for the Wallabies as they prepare for their challenging international fixtures.
