A 38-year-old man named Vasile Bombonel, suspected of being part of a Romanian gang that scams elderly women, has appeared in court in Sydney following his extradition from Western Australia. Allegations suggest that Bombonel and his accomplices targeted senior citizens at shopping centres throughout New South Wales by claiming that the victims had dropped their money or wallets.
While one gang member distracted the elderly individuals, another would allegedly steal their bank cards, which were subsequently used for fraudulent transactions. Authorities believe that 39 victims, aged between 70 and 100, were targeted across various locations in Sydney, as well as in Grafton and areas along the South Coast.
Three additional Romanian suspects connected to the same criminal group were arrested in Queensland a fortnight ago. Bombonel was taken into custody at Perth Airport on April 8 before being transferred to Sydney, where he made a striking entrance through the Qantas terminal, appearing to give a thumbs-up and engaging in sarcastic applause for the cameras.
He faces a total of 18 charges, which include six counts of theft from a person valued at $2,000 or less and charges for theft exceeding $2,000 but not exceeding $5,000. Following his appearance in a Sydney court, Bombonel was denied bail and will remain in custody.
