Aldi has introduced a home delivery service in South Australia, partnering with DoorDash to boost competition and reduce grocery prices for shoppers. Following a successful trial in Canberra, this service allows customers to receive their groceries delivered by DoorDash “dashers,” who manage the shopping and packing.

Simon Rossi from DoorDash highlighted the synergy between Aldi’s affordable prices and DoorDash’s efficient delivery system as a significant advantage for consumers in South Australia. However, while the service provides added convenience, it does come with some additional costs for customers. There are delivery and service fees as well as price mark-ups on certain items. For instance, Nutella is priced at $5.39 in-store but over $6 when ordered online, and Colgate toothpaste, typically $3.49, costs an extra fifty cents through the app.

A typical delivery from Aldi’s Norwood store to the city carries a $2.99 delivery fee, a 25-cent fee for bags, and a $4.99 service charge. Interestingly, first-time users of DoorDash are exempt from the delivery fee on their initial order.

The successful launch in South Australia aims to set the stage for a nationwide rollout of the service. Future plans include offering some of Aldi’s special buys and middle aisle products available through the platform, with these additions anticipated in the coming weeks and months.
