Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has recently expressed his concerns alongside British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer regarding the threats posed by far-right political factions. These discussions come at a time when immigration has become a contentious issue in Europe, with Starmer intensifying measures against illegal migrants.

Albanese’s visit to Number 10 Downing Street, where he met with Starmer, facilitated talks on various pressing topics including defence, security, trade, and the economy. The Australian Prime Minister emphasised their shared values, stating their alignment is particularly crucial in today’s climate.

During the visit, Albanese was spotted bringing along a four-pack of his own brew from Sydney’s Willie The Boatman, hinting at a lighter atmosphere amid serious discussions. Both leaders represent progressive political viewpoints; Albanese celebrated a strong re-election victory in May, while Starmer is navigating early challenges just 14 months after taking office.

Public sentiment in Britain is increasingly focused on issues related to illegal immigration, with a notable rise in unlawful crossings of the English Channel, which has raised alarm among residents. In response, Starmer has introduced a mandatory digital identification system aimed at curbing illegal employment.

Although Starmer chose not to explicitly advise Albanese on enhancing border controls, both leaders are keen to safeguard the AUKUS security alliance against potential disruptions from Donald Trump’s ‘America First’ approach, while remaining wary of the growing influence of far-right ideologies.

With the Reform Party, led by Nigel Farage, currently leading in UK polls, Starmer and Albanese shared their apprehensions regarding the populism trend, underscoring its potential to destabilise communities. Starmer remarked that this shift often sends “shivers” through the populace, while Albanese reiterated his desire to prevent the rise of such populist entities.

In a further ceremonial move, Albanese also had the privilege of meeting King Charles III during his trip to Scotland, expressing his admiration for the monarch.

In summary, the meeting of these two leaders highlights their collaborative efforts to address pressing issues of immigration and the threat of far-right politics, all while navigating their distinct political landscapes.
