A significant wage increase for aged care workers has been confirmed following a ruling by the Fair Work Commission, resulting in many staff members taking home more money each week. Treasurer Jim Chalmers expressed that these workers are vital to the community and economy, deserving every cent of their pay rise. The government aims to attract more young Australians to the sector by investing in better wages.

Registered nurses at level 2, pay point 3—the most common tier—will see a weekly increase of $60.20. When combined with previous wage hikes from the federal government, this translates to an annual boost of approximately $28,000 for these professionals. Enrolled nurses at the same level will receive an additional $62.40 weekly, while personal care workers at level three will enjoy an increase of $39.50 each week.

This wage increase impacts around 400,000 workers across Australia. Further adjustments to wages are scheduled, with an expected rise on August 1, 2026, for registered and enrolled nurses.

Employment Minister Amanda Rishworth highlighted the increase as a measure to help close the gender pay gap, noting that this issue was a key factor in justifying the 15 per cent pay rise for aged care employees. Aged Care Minister Sam Rae emphasised that workers within the sector have long been undervalued and underpaid, asserting that they deserve better remuneration and recognition for their significant contributions.
