A Sydney aged care community is grieving the tragic loss of Boris Marusic, a 70-year-old resident, who was fatally injured during an afternoon walk in Glenfield. The incident occurred yesterday when Marusic was crossing Canterbury Road shortly after 4pm and was struck by a ute, which failed to stop after the collision.
Staff from Whiddon Easton Park, where Marusic resided for the past four years, were among the first to respond, rushing to aid him alongside nearby residents. Witnesses reported that paramedics and police administered first aid until Marusic was transported to Liverpool Hospital; unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter.
Chris Mamarelis, the chief executive of Whiddon Aged Care, has made a heartfelt appeal for the driver involved to come forward, expressing the despair felt by staff and residents alike. He emphasised the emotional impact of the incident on the community, describing the scene as one of devastation, witnessed by staff who were ending their shifts.
Marusic was well-loved within the community, actively participating in various activities and known for his kind nature, which included feeding local birds and buying lottery tickets during his daily walks. Mamarelis shared insights into Marusic’s character, highlighting his integral role in the community, stating he was “part of the fabric of what we do here” and would be deeply missed.
Police have provided details about the vehicle involved, describing it as a silver dual-cab ute, which was last seen heading north on Canterbury Avenue. The incident has left an indelible mark on the residents and staff at Whiddon Easton Park, who are left to mourn the loss of a cherished member of their community.
