On April 11, 1983, a man from the United States, Giovanni Vigliotto, was sentenced to prison for an extensive series of fraud and bigamy offences. Vigliotto had a disturbing modus operandi: he would marry unsuspecting women and then orchestrate the packing of their belongings into a moving truck, planning to meet them at his residence. However, upon their arrival, they would find he was missing. Rather than welcoming them, he would vanish, often selling their possessions at local markets.
His elaborate scheme was alarmingly effective, resulting in a total of 104 victims falling prey to his deceitful tactics. However, his luck eventually ran out when a determined woman became the 105th victim. She embarked on an exhaustive search, visiting numerous markets until she finally located him in Florida, putting an end to his fraudulent activities.
