Daniel McStay’s unfortunate struggle with injuries continues, as Collingwood confirmed he has sustained a medial collateral ligament (MCL) strain during the Anzac Day match against Essendon. The incident occurred when the 29-year-old was subbed off in the third quarter after chasing the ball into the goal square. He fell to the ground, clutching his left knee, which raised immediate concerns.
Collingwood’s general manager of football, Charlie Gardiner, expressed disappointment over the setback, stating, “Unfortunately, scans confirmed this morning that Dan has sustained a moderate grade MCL injury during yesterday’s Anzac Day match against Essendon.” The club indicated that McStay is expected to be sidelined for approximately six to eight weeks.
Gardiner further remarked on the significance of McStay’s contribution to the team this season, noting, “This is obviously a disappointing setback for Dan who has been in good form and has played a really important role for the team so far this season.” He praised McStay’s professionalism and resilience, reflecting confidence in his ability to rebound from this injury and contribute to the team in the latter part of the season.
This latest injury follows a challenging period for McStay, who previously dealt with an MCL injury to his right knee that prevented him from participating in the grand final in 2023. Additionally, he ruptured his left knee’s ACL in the same year but made a commendable return in the latter part of 2024, managing to play five matches.
The Collingwood community remains hopeful for McStay’s swift recovery and return to the field, acknowledging his pivotal role in the squad.
