AFL enthusiasts are bracing for a thrilling encounter as Bailey Smith faces the Western Bulldogs for the first time since his departure from the club. The match has generated considerable buzz, particularly after Smith’s remarks following Geelong’s recent victory over Collingwood, where he boasted of playing in front of 82,000 fans at the MCG, contrasting it with the Bulldogs’ match in Ballarat, which attracted fewer than 5,000 spectators despite a hefty 90-point win against Port Adelaide. When questioned about the atmosphere after the game, Smith quipped, “It’s beautiful, mate – not getting that at Ballarat.”

Bulldogs captain Marcus Bontempelli responded quickly, acknowledging Smith’s comments with a hint of sarcasm. He remarked, “It’s nice to know we’re still on Bailey’s mind,” suggesting that the fewer fans in Ballarat might have left Smith feeling a bit let down. In a playful jab, he noted, “maybe that’s why he’s a little bit disappointed.”

Smith further stirred the pot on social media, posting from ‘The Salty Dog Cafe’ in Torquay, accompanied by three fishing emojis, indicating perhaps that he’s reeling in the fun while teasing the old club.

Former Essendon champion Matthew Lloyd noted the palpable tension surrounding Smith’s exit, saying, “That heartburn is real.” He highlighted that Smith did not part ways with the Bulldogs amicably. Football journalist Damian Barrett speculated that Smith had his sights on moving to Geelong long before the end of the 2024 season, particularly during his recovery from a torn ACL.

Richmond legend Matthew Richardson welcomed the drama, asserting that such rivalry adds excitement to the sport. He expressed enthusiasm for Smith’s impact at Geelong, stating, “I think he’s been great for Geelong…and his personality adds spunk to the game.” He alluded to the intrigue Smith brings to the upcoming clash, saying, “I want more of it. I love it. How big a game will it be? Thanks Bailey, I say.”

In his recent outing, Smith performed exceptionally well, helping Geelong secure a narrow three-point victory over Collingwood with 34 disposals and a goal. The stage is set for an electrifying showdown, promising plenty of fireworks as he reunites with his former team.
