Nick Riewoldt has urged a complete revamp of the AFL’s illicit drug policy due to escalating concerns about player misuse of current protocols. In response to criticism of the league’s culture, the AFL has suggested implementing a stricter three-strike system. Recent incidents, including former Melbourne player Joel Smith testing positive for cocaine during a match, have raised alarms.

Riewoldt has been a long-time critic of the existing drug policies, stating that more rigorous measures are essential for accountability among players. He believes that the current self-reporting loopholes can lead to greater issues down the line, urging for changes that could have mitigated the challenges faced by several players.

Proposed adjustments to the policy include imposing a $5000 fine for a first offence, with public naming and suspension following subsequent breaches. In the AFLW, initial fines would be set at $900, mirroring the men’s league penalties for repeat offences. Concerns have arisen from the AFL Players Association regarding potential breaches of confidentiality, particularly as a panel will be notified about positive tests, unlike the previous protocol that restricted knowledge to club and AFL doctors.

AFL CEO Andrew Dillion acknowledged the need for ongoing discussions with players and the association, emphasising a commitment to refining the policy while recognising that illicit drug use is a broader societal concern.
