AFL CEO Andrew Dillon has defended the choice of Snoop Dogg as the entertainment for the upcoming grand final, asserting that a “family friendly” rendition of the rap legend’s songs will be showcased at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). The announcement has sparked mixed reactions among fans and critics alike. While Snoop Dogg is globally recognised, his lyrics often touch on sensitive topics such as drug use and misogyny, which have raised concerns about appropriateness for the event.

Broadcaster Tony Jones and 3AW host Tom Elliott have openly criticised the AFL’s decision, questioning the inclusion of a performer known for controversial themes. During discussions, Dillon was asked by Elliott whether Snoop would perform popular tracks like “Gin and Juice.” Dillon, however, emphasized that Snoop is capable of delivering a version suitable for a diverse audience. He cited Snoop’s performances at significant events like the Super Bowl and Olympics, where he has tailored his content to be appropriate for all ages.

Dillon stated, “What you will see on grand final day is an amazing artist, globally relevant and culturally relevant… a version of Snoop Dogg.” He pointed out that despite objections, many artists have aspects in their catalogues that may not resonate with everyone. Dillon further noted that Snoop Dogg has transitioned over the years, now being a grandfather involved in positive community initiatives, including a youth football league.

The AFL aims to leverage Snoop’s star power to attract new fans to Australian football, hoping that his performance will resonate with those who may not already be part of the AFL community. Snoop Dogg’s history of performing at major events, including the Super Bowl and WrestleMania, underscores his established presence in the entertainment industry.

In previous grand finals, the AFL has featured artists like Robbie Williams, KISS, and Meat Loaf, showcasing a diverse range of musical talent. With Dillon’s assurances, the hope is that Snoop Dogg will deliver an entertaining show while respecting the expectations of AFL’s family-oriented audience.
