The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) is currently investigating the distribution of nearly 50,000 unlawful pamphlets targeting independent MP Allegra Spender in the lead-up to the upcoming federal election. According to the AEC, over 47,000 leaflets that oppose Spender have been circulated in the Wentworth area, raising concerns as they lack any authorisation, making it impossible for voters to ascertain their origin.

In an official statement, the AEC confirmed it had received numerous complaints about the unauthorised pamphlets. It emphasised the seriousness of the situation, noting that such actions could result in both court proceedings and civil penalties for those responsible. Efforts are underway to identify the party behind these pamphlets.

Allegra Spender, who previously won the Wentworth seat from former Liberal MP Dave Sharma, has yet to comment officially, although her office has been approached for a statement. The independent MP, part of the teal independents movement that has made significant electoral gains, is expected to address the media later today.

In related incidents, some of Spender’s campaign materials have been subjected to vandalism, with her corflutes being damaged, while posters for her Liberal opponent, Ro Knox, have also been targeted. As the federal election nears, early voting is set to commence tomorrow, further intensifying the electoral atmosphere.
