Adelaide is set to become the first city in Australia to trial artificial intelligence (AI) cameras at its busiest roads. This innovative technology is designed to enhance safety and reduce travel times for drivers. The state government is implementing four smart cameras strategically located at major thoroughfares, including Heaslip Road at Penfield, the Paradise Interchange, and two points along Main South Road at Old Noarlunga.

Transport Minister Tom Koutsantonis has touted the AI cameras as a significant tool for optimising the city’s traffic network. The project, costing $350,000, will leverage AI to monitor congestion, allowing the Traffic Management Centre to adjust traffic signals in real-time, thus facilitating smoother traffic flow. According to Michael Brown, the Artificial Intelligence Assistant Minister, this technology enables a more immediate response to live traffic conditions.

The economic impact of traffic congestion is substantial, with estimates suggesting it costs $33,000 for every 5,000 vehicles delayed in a 20-minute queue. By implementing these cameras, the government aims to alleviate such delays significantly. Koutsantonis also noted that the operational costs of integrating AI into existing traffic systems could be as low as $8,000 per intersection, provided the requisite infrastructure is already established.

The anticipated benefits of this technology extend beyond reduced journey times; it is expected to enhance efficiency in public transport, expedite freight deliveries, and ultimately save time and resources for all road users. Should this trial demonstrate success, plans for a broader rollout of AI cameras across the city’s road network will likely follow.
