A 58-year-old man has been charged following a significant incident involving reckless driving and an assault on a police officer in Oaklands Park, a suburb in Adelaide’s south. The event occurred on a Tuesday evening when officers noticed the driver in a luxury Jaguar speeding at over 100 km/h in a 60 km/h zone and performing a burnout right before their eyes.
The police pursued the vehicle, which ultimately veered into a nearby driveway. Upon attempting to engage with the man, he resisted arrest and allegedly kicked one of the officers. Following the altercation, he was taken into custody and now faces multiple charges, including failing to comply with police directions, driving under the influence, misuse of a motor vehicle, and aggravated assault.
Following the incident, the driver expressed his intention to contest the charges in court next month. His vehicle has been impounded for a period of 28 days as part of the ongoing investigation. Local residents have voiced their concerns, highlighting the potential dangers of such reckless behaviour, particularly in a residential area. One neighbour, Gerardine, remarked that the situation could have resulted in tragedy, especially with children present nearby. Another local, Corey Hanson, recounted the chaos surrounding the incident, mentioning the presence of multiple police vehicles in the area.
As the investigation continues, the community remains on alert regarding safety and law enforcement in their neighbourhood.
