Adelaide City Council Faces Backlash Over ‘Unacceptable Cash Grab’

The Adelaide City Council has come under scrutiny for extending paid parking hours in popular areas close to the Fringe Festival, with some critics labelling the move as an “unpalatable cash grab.” The decision to keep parking meters operational until 10pm has sparked mixed reactions from the local community, particularly around Hindmarsh Square, where visitors may face unexpected costs if they wish to park in the vicinity.

According to councillor Mike Philippou, the rationale behind this change is to enhance accessibility and enjoyment of the precinct during the festival period. The council hopes that this extended parking availability will encourage a greater number of visitors compared to the previous season, citing data from in-ground sensors indicating a 24 per cent increase in car visits this year.

Previously, parking in these areas, including parts of Pirie Street and Bartells Road, was complimentary after 6pm; however, the new regulations mean that drivers will now have to pay for parking until late at night every day. This alteration has raised concerns among locals and visitors alike, with some suggesting the initiative may be an attempt to catch drivers off guard.

Customer Peter Mourtzios expressed reservations, stating that the extra cost could deter him from visiting the area after hours. The frustration is exacerbated for local traders as well, whose employees are now compelled to pay for parking during their shifts, further impacting their operations.

The revised parking policies will remain in effect until the conclusion of the Fringe Festival on March 23, intensifying the discussion about balance between council revenue generation and community accessibility during major events.
