In a significant trial in Paris, French actor Gérard Depardieu faces allegations of sexual assault from multiple women, including a 54-year-old set dresser and a 34-year-old assistant during the filming of “Les Volets Verts” in 2021. Depardieu, 76, has denied the accusations, claiming he has not engaged in such conduct.
During the trial’s third day, the younger plaintiff provided detailed testimony about her experiences with Depardieu, recounting three separate instances where he allegedly groped her. In one incident, she described being alone with him briefly when he unexpectedly touched her on the buttocks. Shocked and frightened, she remained silent. In subsequent occurrences, she stated that he placed his hands on her breasts, to which she responded by saying “No.” Following these incidents, she informed her supervisor, prompting further investigation, which reportedly upset the actor.
Despite her initial inclination to handle the matter privately and continue her work, the plaintiff ultimately decided to file a formal complaint to support the other victims and make her truths known. Depardieu, during the trial, reiterated his innocence, asserting that he is not the kind of person depicted in the allegations and suggesting a misunderstanding of his character due to his past use of vulgar language.
The trial has included testimonies from other women who accused Depardieu of sexual misconduct, with claims dating back to incidents in 2007 and 2014. However, some accusations could not proceed due to the statute of limitations or lack of evidence. Notably, comedian Sarah Brooks shared her experience of being inappropriately touched by him during a photo opportunity a decade ago but chose not to report it at the time due to her young age and the actor’s fame.
Additionally, a witness from the film set described witnessing an inappropriate scene involving the set dresser and Depardieu, remarking on the shocking nature of the event.
Supporters of Depardieu, including fellow actor Fanny Ardant, have defended him, acknowledging his past crude behaviour but asserting they have never seen him behave inappropriately. Ardant highlighted the evolving societal standards regarding acceptable behaviours, noting that what may have been tolerated in the past is no longer acceptable today.
This is the first time one of the numerous allegations against Depardieu has gone to court, with several others having been dismissed for various reasons. The trial is ongoing, with a verdict to be delivered at a later date. If convicted, Depardieu could face a prison sentence of up to five years and financial penalties.
