Peter Ryan OAM, a respected journalist and former ABC chief business and finance correspondent, passed away at the age of 64, just a month after retiring due to ill health. Famed for his distinguished career, Ryan spent many years with the ABC, including roles as the Washington bureau chief and head of TV news and current affairs in Melbourne. He was first diagnosed with metastatic thyroid cancer in 2014, which ultimately led to his retirement in June.

Ryan’s contributions to journalism did not go unrecognised; in 2022, he was awarded the Order of Australia Medal for his service. His legacy is deeply felt at the ABC, with news director Justin Stevens highlighting Ryan’s mentorship and professionalism that greatly impacted many individuals within the organisation. “Peter leaves a significant legacy,” Stevens remarked, emphasising Ryan’s profound influence on journalism and society at large.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers shared his admiration for Ryan upon the announcement of his retirement, praising him as an “absolute legend” whose insights into the economy were invaluable. He expressed that listening to Ryan was essential for grasping key economic issues.

Ryan’s journalism career began at the Sydney Daily Mirror in 1980 when he started as a copy boy. He reflected on a different era in journalism, with its challenges and charm, often remarking that the allure of the “good old days” is somewhat of a myth. In his farewell remarks, he expressed lasting gratitude to the ABC for the risks they took with him, enabling significant opportunities including a foreign posting in Washington.

In his view, the essence of journalism lay in simplifying complex issues for the public rather than amassing accolades. He cherished feedback that reflected his ability to convey intricate topics in an approachable manner, valuing this more than any awards he may have received.

Peter Ryan is survived by his wife, Mary, and his daughter, Charlotte. His passing marks the end of a significant chapter in Australian journalism, leaving behind a lasting imprint on both his colleagues and the broader community.
