West Coast’s Harley Reid found himself in a precarious situation during a recent match against the Brisbane Lions after reacting to an aggressive taunt from the crowd. The 19-year-old rookie, who was the first pick in the 2023 draft, displayed his frustration when he raised his middle finger in response to a spectator’s comments following a collision with Lions ruckman Oscar McInerney.

As Reid laid on the ground, a fan approached, waving a packet of tissues at him, leading to bemusement among commentators. Western Bulldogs great Brad Johnson remarked on the absurdity of this gesture, while Fox Footy commentator Corbin Middlemas chuckled at the irony of the scenario, noting Reid’s status as the top draft pick.

Reid’s reaction might have repercussions, potentially resulting in a fine, despite West Coast earning a free kick from McInerney’s challenge. After the match, coach Andrew McQualter downplayed the incident, describing Reid’s actions as “just a bit of fun,” emphasising the need for a lighter atmosphere in the sport.

Though Reid has faced challenges this season, recording only 12 disposals in a previous match, he rebounded against the Lions, securely gathering 15 disposals, six tackles, and seven clearances despite a slow start where he didn’t touch the ball in the first quarter. However, his performance was marred by seven free kicks conceded.

McQualter acknowledged Reid’s perseverance on the field, stating that while his opening quarter was lacklustre, he improved and had significant moments during the game. The coach affirmed that Reid is still honing his skills, promising support as he develops into a better player and teammate.
