Brandon Smith has expressed his surprise regarding his potential departure from the Sydney Roosters, revealing it came as an unexpected development. The controversial player was enjoying some time off after attending Angus Crichton’s wedding, a break provided to teammates due to the team’s bye in round 10. However, on his way home from the celebration, Smith was informed about an earlier-than-expected transfer to South Sydney.

Originally, the 28-year-old had planned to join the Rabbitohs on a two-year contract starting next season, but current indications suggest he could make the switch as soon as this weekend. In a conversation on The Bye Round Podcast, Smith acknowledged that it seems increasingly likely he has played his last game for the Roosters. The primary issue preventing a swift transfer between the rival clubs appears to be a reported $40,000 clause in his contract for the current year.

Reflecting on his situation, Smith stated, "It definitely looks that way from the articles and conversations I’ve had. Everything I have read so far suggests I’m not really wanted." While attending Crichton’s wedding, he addressed the murmurs of his exit, describing the shock of receiving the news from his manager that morning, highlighting that many details still needed to be resolved, particularly regarding his contractual situation.

Smith joined the Roosters as a marquee signing from the Melbourne Storm two seasons ago but has struggled with injuries, limiting him to just 41 appearances. Despite the looming change, he indicated that he still intends to attend training, revealing that he had a good conversation with Roosters coach Trent Robinson. Smith mentioned that Robinson surprised him with how quickly things have escalated, noting that the club is looking to save costs.

The transition may not happen immediately, as Smith stated, "It’s not gonna happen overnight – they’re not gonna be able to draw up a contract overnight – so it’s gonna be an awkward one." As of now, neither the Roosters nor the Rabbitohs have officially confirmed the move. The situation leaves Smith navigating the uncertainty while remaining committed to his training schedule.
