Ken Hinkley’s tenure as Port Adelaide coach began on a disappointing note, as the team suffered a staggering 91-point defeat against Collingwood on Saturday. This loss marks Hinkley’s final season with the Power, with Josh Carr set to take over in 2026. Hinkley acknowledged that his side was “off the pace” against a Collingwood outfit that proved to be more robust.

Post-match, Hinkley expressed his disappointment, saying, “We didn’t perform anywhere near where we’ve been performing in the pre-season.” He noted that the Magpies capitalised on Port’s turnovers and were dominant around contests, reminiscent of their previous encounters. Despite Collingwood having previously lost to GWS in the opening round, their comprehensive victory raised immediate concerns for Port Adelaide.

Hinkley’s comments came under scrutiny, particularly from AFL legend Jack Riewoldt, who critiqued the coach’s narrative that Collingwood’s prior defeat accounted for their performance. Riewoldt emphasised that a 91-point defeat is significant, regardless of circumstances leading up to the game.

For Port Adelaide, the loss amplifies the pressure on Hinkley, with AFL great David King suggesting it reflects a “slow goodbye” that could create confusion within the club. He mentioned how such situations can affect a team’s subconscious performance. King noted that even slight shortcomings can lead to heavy consequences in the contemporary AFL landscape.

Additionally, the decision to trade Dan Houston to Collingwood drew criticism. Former player Kane Cornes labelled the decision a blunder, questioning why a contracted player like Houston was let go.

Amidst these challenges, the Power will aim to redeem themselves in their upcoming match against Richmond, while Collingwood prepares to face the Western Bulldogs. The outcome of the next fixtures will be crucial for both teams moving forward.
