Aussie golfer Marc Leishman has responded to criticism regarding LIV Golf’s format, which some argue leaves players unprepared for major tournaments. Following the recent PGA Championship at Quail Hollow, where Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau struggled despite starting strong, commentator Brandel Chamblee suggested that LIV’s less competitive setting contributed to their poor finishes.
Leishman dismissed such claims, asserting that the LIV format actually enhances preparation for majors. He pointed out that players compete against strong fields on challenging courses each week. In an interview with Australian media, he explained that while LIV events consist of 54 holes, this format encourages a quick start, creating a unique type of pressure that can sharpen a player’s game.
He further noted the enjoyment of playing without the grind of traditional tour events, suggesting that a more relaxed approach leads to improved performance. Leishman recently qualified for the US Open after a demanding 36-hole qualifier at Woodmont Country Club, marking his return to major tournaments for the first time since 2022. He secured one of the four available spots after succeeding in a playoff.
Leishman believes that his current playing schedule with LIV allows him to prepare effectively for majors, something he feels would be difficult on the PGA Tour due to conflicting tournament commitments. He mentioned an upcoming tournament that, while not a major, would help him acclimatise to the conditions he’ll face at the US Open.
In addition to the US Open, Leishman’s performance at the Australian Open last December has also secured him a spot at next month’s British Open. His fellow Aussies, Lucas Herbert and Karl Vilips, participated in the US Open qualifier but unfortunately did not advance. Notably, other prominent golfers like Max Homa and Rickie Fowler also missed out on qualifying.
With the US Open set to begin next Thursday night (AEST), Leishman appears confident in his preparation and in his ability to compete effectively among the world’s best.
