Yamba, situated on the traditional lands of the Yaegl people, lies approximately three hours south of Brisbane along the New South Wales coast. After a two-decade hiatus for education and work, I returned to Yamba with my family. Living between Pippi Beach and Convent Beach, I cherish daily ocean dips in summer.
The local food scene has always thrived, blending tourism with a focus on healthy, sustainable eating. Notable establishments include Playa Bodega, renowned for its fresh Mexican seafood dishes, and El Ocaso, where an Italian chef serves delightful seafood and homemade pasta. On Fridays, many locals opt for takeaways from Yamba’s Fisho or Drift Pizza Bar, which is known for its organic offerings and mocktail creations.
Yamba’s natural beauty is remarkable, with easy access to numerous swimming spots and walking paths. Pippi Beach and Whiting Beach are favourites, while the Yamba breakwall offers scenic views and abundant marine life. For something more adventurous, the Angourie Blue and Green Pools are a mere 40-minute walk away.
Despite lacking the nightlife of larger towns, Yamba hosts vibrant live music venues like Jacko’s Bar, which offers tapas and karaoke. The local farmers’ market showcases fresh produce alongside artisan goods, reflecting Yamba’s strong community spirit and commitment to sustainability. With a range of accommodation options from upscale hotels to budget-friendly stays, Yamba has something for everyone.
