Orange, situated on the ancestral lands of the Wiradjuri people, is where I established my roots after returning from university in Sydney. My family has operated a farm near Canowindra for five generations, and now I find joy as both a winemaker and the proprietor of Swinging Bridge winery.

Since my arrival in Orange in 1999, the culinary landscape has transformed remarkably. What was once a sparse offering of cafes has blossomed into a thriving food and wine scene, making Orange one of the premier gastronomic destinations in New South Wales. The Union Bank restaurant, set in a charming 1850s schoolhouse, serves delectable dishes like octopus and beef tartare, while Lucetta Dining, with its intimate setting, delights guests with Italian specialties, such as duck ragu pasta.

Vineyard dining is also on the rise. Printhie Dining showcases fresh south coast oysters paired with its renowned sparkling wine. Additionally, Rowlee Dining and Bar offers casual courtyard dining with generous share plates, and Swinging Bridge features exquisite five-course tastings, complete with vineyard tours led by sommelier-trained staff.

For coffee aficionados, local cafes like Byng Street are not to be missed, and Good Eddy is celebrated for its toasties.

Orange’s stunning seasonal changes are beautifully represented in its greenery, with Cook Park showcasing ancient trees and swings for children. Nearby, Gaanha bula/Mount Canobolas, the area’s highest point, is a hub for outdoor activities, offering walking tracks through picturesque landscapes.

On warm days, Lake Canobolas provides a refreshing swimming spot, complemented by the Lakeside Kiosk & Cafe, which crafts exquisite picnic hampers. The Trail of Awesomeness, a mountain biking trail, allows riders to take in breathtaking views of the region.

The nightlife in Orange is vibrant and bustling, with popular spots like The Gladstone hotel, which serves excellent Thai cuisine, and the intimate Hey Rosey wine bar, known for its fantastic roast dinners. For those seeking creative cocktails, Washington & Co whiskey bar offers an inviting atmosphere. Families can savour gelato from the Spilt Milk Bar, which has become a local favourite.

The region is rich in cultural experiences, with notable shops like The White Place and Jumbled for homewares and art. The Orange Regional Gallery hosts prestigious exhibitions, while events such as Orange Food Week—Australia’s longest-running food festival—attracts food lovers and showcases the region’s culinary talents.

Surrounding historic villages like Millthorpe and Canowindra further enhance Orange’s appeal, offering award-winning dining options and charming atmospheres. For visitors, accommodation ranges from luxurious stays at Basalt Orange with vineyard views to the conveniently located Yallungah Boutique Hotel and classic pub-style stays at Hotel Canobolas.

In essence, Orange is a vibrant blend of natural beauty, thriving culinary scenes, and rich culture, making it a captivating destination for both locals and visitors alike.
