The search for a new head coach for the Queensland Maroons has intensified following the departure of Tahnee Norris, who held the position for five years. Ruan Sims, a former player and prominent voice in the sport, has highlighted that one key candidate has been overlooked in recent discussions. During an appearance on “NRLW Wrap,” both Sims and fellow rugby league figure Allana Ferguson acknowledged Greg Inglis and Nathan Cross as serious contenders for the role. However, Sims expressed her surprise that Karyn Murphy’s name did not initially come to mind.

Murphy, a Hall of Famer and revered player, has made significant contributions to rugby league. She represented Australia in 27 Tests and was instrumental in leading the Jillaroos to their first World Cup victory in 2013. Since retiring, she has focused on fostering the next generation of talent through pathway programs and has had a match medal named in her honour in the NRLW grand final.

Sims underscored Murphy’s impressive credentials, noting her integral role with the Gold Coast Titans where she serves as head coach. She praised Murphy’s calm approach and existing rapport with the players, indicating that her leadership experience within the NRLW could be vital for the Maroons’ future.

While Murphy and Cross have both coached NRLW teams and are currently guiding squads for the 2025 season, Inglis’s past as an assistant coach under Norris and at the Wests Tigers showcases his involvement in women’s rugby league. However, Sims speculated that Inglis might fall short due to his relative lack of head coaching experience.

The landscape may shift depending on potential changes to the State of Origin series schedule, which could impact the dynamics of head coaching roles. If the series were to clash with the regular NRLW season, both Murphy and Cross may need to choose between representative duties and club commitments.

As the Maroons consider their next steps, Sims believes that regardless of the final decision, Murphy and Cross are strong candidates alongside Inglis, each bringing unique qualities to the table for this pivotal coaching role.
