The NSW Waratahs have strengthened their backrow with the acquisition of former Wallabies standout Pete Samu, who has signed a two-year contract. The 33-year-old, currently playing for Bordeaux in France, has had a successful stint, helping his team reach the Champions Cup final against Northampton on 24 May.
Waratahs coach Dan McKellar, who previously collaborated with Samu during their time together at the ACT Brumbies and the Wallabies, expressed enthusiasm about his return. Samu, who has made 33 Test appearances, is also vying for a spot on the national team as they prepare for a series against the British and Irish Lions this year.
Samu, who had a brief connection with the Waratahs during his term at Randwick, shared his excitement about returning home. “My family and I are really happy to be coming home. We’ve enjoyed our time in France but it’s the right time for us to return to Australia,” he said. He noted that returning to Sydney feels like a full-circle moment, as it is where his professional rugby journey began. Samu expressed optimism about re-joining McKellar and the Waratahs, believing that the team is on a positive path. He is eager to contribute to Australian rugby and to earn another chance to don the national jersey.
Samu’s signing also helps alleviate the impact of Angus Bell’s decision to join Ulster for the upcoming season. McKellar praised Samu for his unique skill set and versatility, highlighting his capability to play across different positions in the backrow, including number eight, seven, or six. “He’s an athletic backrower with genuine skill who can open up a game. He’s a great addition to our team,” McKellar stated, looking forward to working with Samu again.
This move not only enhances the Waratahs’ squad depth but also signifies an important return for a player eager to make his mark once more in Australian rugby.
