One of the most significant rivalries in rugby league is set to reignite this year as the Australian Kangaroos announce their tour to England for the first Ashes series in over twenty years. The ARL Commission has confirmed that this three-match contest will occur in October and November, marking the first official rugby league Ashes since 2003.
Peter V’landys, chairman of the ARLC, expressed pride in reviving this key tradition, highlighting the series as an opportunity to bolster international rugby league. He stated that Kangaroo tours are pivotal to the sport’s heritage and emphasised the excitement for the current players, who have not experienced the unique atmosphere of such tours. This series aims to contribute to the growth of the game in the north of England.
The Ashes series is a significant boost for English rugby league, with games being scheduled in renowned venues. The opener will take place at Wembley Stadium on October 25 (AEDT), followed by a match at Everton’s brand-new stadium on November 1, and will conclude at Headingley Stadium on November 9.
Head coach Mal Meninga, a veteran of four Kangaroos tours in the 1980s and 1990s, believes this series will be vital preparation for the upcoming World Cup. He noted the historical importance of the Australia-England Ashes series, which has been a cornerstone of international rugby league since its inception in the early 1900s. Meninga expressed excitement about the venues and the chance to reconnect with a storied rivalry that hasn’t been contested in this format for nearly two decades.
Overall, the tour not only revives a cherished sporting tradition but also promises thrilling competition, enhancing the fabric of rugby league as it moves towards future international contests.
