Three senior ministers from the Victorian Labor government—Finance Minister Danny Pearson, Health Minister Mary-Anne Thomas, and Water Minister Gayle Tierney—have announced their resignations, prompting Premier Jacinta Allan to prepare a revamped cabinet ahead of the upcoming state election in November. The departures are part of a strategic refresh aimed at introducing new talent into the government.

During his emotional farewell, Pearson expressed his deep gratitude for his 12 years in Parliament and his six years as a minister, stating that he has cherished working alongside individuals he admires. Mary-Anne Thomas acknowledged that she could no longer fully commit to her role, citing a need to focus on other life aspects—indicating that the demands of the job require a complete dedication of effort. Tierney, a serving member since 2006, commented on the inevitability of stepping back after nearly two decades, feeling that it was the right moment for her and fitting for her life’s current chapter.

Their resignations follow the recent exit of Natalie Hutchins, who left her position as Minister for the Prevention of Family Violence, resulting in four key vacancies as the election approaches. Premier Allan thanked the departing ministers for their invaluable contributions, asserting that their resignations should not be interpreted as an exodus from a failing administration. She highlighted the depth of talent within the Labor caucus, emphasising that fresh faces with innovative ideas will take their places.

Support for this sentiment came from the departing ministers themselves. Pearson reiterated confidence in the party’s strength and the leadership of Premier Allan, while Tierney expressed optimism for Labor’s chances in the upcoming election. The state’s Labor caucus is set to convene soon to select replacements for the vacated positions, marking a significant moment in the lead-up to the election.
