Simon Hull, the coach and father of Australian runner Jessica Hull, has publicly reflected on his emotional response to his daughter’s fall during the national athletics championships. He admitted that his reaction was inappropriate and reached out to the national athletics federation to apologise for his behaviour during the incident. Despite his remorse, he remains adamant that Jessica was unfairly treated in the final stretch of the 1500-metre race, which he believes severely impacted her chance to achieve a historic victory.
Jessica was aiming to make history by winning gold in all three middle-distance events—800m, 1500m, and 5000m—an accomplishment no athlete has ever achieved at the Australian championships. Unfortunately, her quest for glory ended when she was clipped by fellow competitor Claudia Hollingsworth, resulting in a dramatic fall. Hollingsworth initially won the race but was disqualified due to the collision. However, after an appeal, the disqualification was lifted, igniting further controversy.
As Jessica struggled to get back on her feet and continue the race, Simon voiced his outrage from the stands, insisting that she had been robbed. His passionate protest lasted at least 15 minutes, drawing attention to the incident, but later he expressed regret for his behaviour. He recognised the importance of maintaining composure at sporting events, particularly around younger audiences, and stated, “I could have been a lot better. I could have been a lot calmer.”
Simon clarified that his reaction was uncharacteristic and highlighted Jessica as a respectful sportswoman who deserves better representation. He emphasised his desire for athletes to compete in an even playing field, free from such incidents that could unfairly affect their performances.
Following this incident, Simon contacted Australian Athletics’ high-performance department to apologise for any disruption caused. There’s ongoing assurance from both the Hull camp and Australian Athletics that no significant conflict exists between them.
In a statement, Australian Athletics explained that they overturned Hollingsworth’s disqualification after reviewing all footage and speaking to relevant parties. Jessica, after winning the 5000m event, discussed the initial reasons for the disqualification, noting that the race officials changed their stance based on incomplete arguments regarding the fall.
Hollingsworth has now been named to the Australian team for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, while Jessica did not secure automatic qualification. Yet, there is confidence that she will be selected based on her Olympic silver medal performance in the 1500m. Simon expressed sadness over the missed opportunity for Jessica to secure victories, stating, “It’s basically destroyed her weekend of creating some history.”
