Zak Butters is facing scrutiny after being reported for allegedly using abusive language towards an umpire during Port Adelaide’s match against St Kilda on Sunday. Reports from SEN’s Tom Morris indicate that there is no available audio from the umpire’s microphone to support Butters’ defence, contributing to his frustration.

Butters has expressed his annoyance, feeling that the umpire’s assertion tarnishes his reputation in the sport. Kane Cornes highlighted the gravity of the situation, noting it resulted in a crucial 50-metre penalty and a goal for the opposing team. The incident occurred after a free kick was awarded to St Kilda’s Mitch Owens following a ruck contest, prompting Butters to question the decision and gesture towards the umpire, Nick Foot.

The AFL is now expected to consider Foot’s account while determining next steps, as the lack of audio evidence leaves Butters in the difficult position of relying on his teammates as potential witnesses. Butters insists that he did not use any disrespectful language, stating that his post-match interaction with Foot was friendly and simply consisted of asking about the free kick.

He mentioned having teammates nearby during the incident, including Ollie Wines, and voiced his surprise at the report against him. Butters maintains that he usually has a respectful rapport with umpires and is confident in contesting any charges, firmly stating that he would never hurl abuse at an umpire.

Currently, Port Adelaide is positioned 10th on the ladder, with their next match scheduled against Hawthorn at the MCG on Saturday afternoon.
