Brad Fittler has expressed concern for the Parramatta Eels following their recent heavy defeat to the Gold Coast Titans, urging the team to quickly identify solutions ahead of their upcoming clash with the Bulldogs. The Eels were booed off the field after suffering a dismal 52-10 loss, marking one of the most challenging starts to a season for the blue and golds, who have already conceded a staggering 226 points in just six matches.
In an interview with Nine’s Today, Fittler emphasised the team’s alarming defensive struggles, stating, "They are averaging 37 points against them each week, which simply isn’t sustainable for winning games." He acknowledged the numerous injuries plaguing the squad, with key players Sam Tuivaiti and Kelma Tuilagi likely missing the crucial game against the Bulldogs.
Despite understanding the impact of injuries, Fittler insisted that teams must still effectively defend their line. He noted the Bulldogs, who had a strong performance against Penrith, would pose a significant challenge in the next match. If Parramatta fails to address their deficiencies this week, Fittler warned that the situation could become embarrassing.
This defeat for the Titans was only the second occasion in their history to hit the 50-point mark, showcasing their resurgence under coach Josh Hannay, while the Eels coach Jason Ryles appeared visibly disheartened after the match. He acknowledged that fans were justified in expressing their disappointment and highlighted the team’s lacklustre performance as "really disappointing". Ryles pointed out that while there were glimpses of resilience in the previous week’s game against the Tigers, that spirit seemed to vanish in the most recent outing.
Ryles further stressed, "We need to uncover why there was such a lack of desire today, as that is not something I’ve seen from this group previously." As the Eels prepare for the home game against the Bulldogs, both Ryles and captain Mitch Moses recognise the urgent need for improvement, with Moses admitting he struggled to find answers for the team’s continuous slow starts, which have left them trailing early in matches.
The upcoming fixture against the Bulldogs presents an opportunity for the Eels to rectify their shortcomings, as they seek to regain the trust and support of their fans. The stage is set for a decisive showdown that could have significant ramifications for their season trajectory.
