Since his election, US President Trump has shifted his tone regarding Pope Leo XIV, the first American pope, originally expressing admiration. Following Pope Leo’s sustained criticisms of Trump’s military actions in the Middle East, this admiration has noticeably diminished.

During public statements, Pope Leo condemned the threats against Iran, labelling them unacceptable. In retaliation, Trump has called the Pope “weak” and “terrible”, launching into claims about various issues, including COVID-19 and international relations. In a post on his platform, Truth Social, Trump claimed that the Pope was ineffective in handling crime and social policy. He also expressed a preference for Pope Leo’s brother, suggesting he aligns more closely with Trump’s MAGA ideals.

Trump openly rejected the notion of a pope who tolerates nuclear weaponry and voiced discontent with any religious leader who criticises the President’s policies, feeling vindicated by his election victory. He further asserted that Pope Leo’s elevation to the papacy was merely a tactic to placate Trump, suggesting that the Pope’s American background was a strategic move by the Church.

Referring to conflicts in Venezuela and Iran, Trump disapproved of the Pope’s stance, especially regarding nuclear weapons. He indicated that if it weren’t for his presidency, Pope Leo would not have ascended to the papacy and accused him of associating with figures aligned with Barack Obama, suggesting a conspiratorial narrative around the Pope’s selection.

Yet, despite their tensions, Leo has been advocating for peace, urging the American public to tell their leaders to reject warfare. Echoing these sentiments, he referenced the ongoing conflict in Lebanon, expressing concerns about the impacts on Christians there.

Pope Leo’s Easter message urged unity and a peaceful resolution to global conflicts, imploring attention to the innocent victims of war. His call for dialogue has surfaced against the backdrop of escalating hostilities in the region, drawing the Vatican’s concern.

The relationship between the Pope and Trump highlights a complex intersection of politics and faith, revealing the rifts that can emerge when ethical beliefs confront political agendas.
