Hungarian voters have decisively ended the 16-year tenure of Prime Minister Viktor Orban in a shocking election that signals a shift away from his authoritarian policies. The election saw Peter Magyar, a former ally of Orban who now leads the opposition Tisza party, emerge victorious by focusing on key issues such as corruption, healthcare, and public transport, alongside a strong pro-European message. Magyar aims to mend Hungary’s strained relationships with the European Union and NATO, which have deteriorated under Orban’s leadership.

European leaders were quick to congratulate Magyar as results indicated that he secured over 53% of the votes compared to Orban’s governing Fidesz party, which garnered about 38%. While it’s yet to be confirmed if Tisza will hold the two-thirds majority in parliament needed for substantial legislative reforms, the turnout was notable, reaching over 77%, the highest in Hungary’s post-communist history.

Orban, a prominent figure within the global far-right movement and a supporter of both Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, conceded defeat, admitting the election result was “painful.” He expressed his intent to serve from the opposition, while Magyar celebrated with supporters, promising a new era for Hungary.

With deepening concerns regarding foreign influence, there were allegations from both parties about electoral violations, hinting at potential disputes over the results. As the EU watches closely, the incoming administration is under pressure to navigate the sensitive geopolitics surrounding Ukraine—a topic where Orban’s regime had often frustrated EU efforts to assist amidst Russia’s aggression.

Magyar, formerly an insider in Orban’s administration before establishing Tisza in 2024, conducted an intensive campaign aimed at reversing Hungary’s trajectory towards Russia and reaffirming its position within the democratic sphere of Europe. Tisza’s affiliation with the European People’s Party aligns it with mainstream centre-right politics, contrasting sharply with Orban’s long history of media control and manipulated electoral practices.

Magyar’s victory is seen by many as a crucial juncture in Hungarian politics, potentially ending a period marked by the undermining of democratic institutions and a tumultuous relationship with the EU. Orban’s past acts have repeatedly strained Hungary’s standing within the EU, evidenced by his controversial decisions blocking vital EU aid to Ukraine.

The election outcome is significant, illustrating a profound public desire for change. As calls for unity and reconciliation echo from Tisza’s leadership, it remains to be seen how Hungary’s new administration will redefine its foreign relations while addressing domestic concerns that resonated strongly during the campaign. The next steps for Magyar as he takes the helm will be pivotal for Hungary’s future direction within Europe and its global alliances.
