A significant fire, fuelled by lithium batteries, broke out at a recycling plant in Maddington, Perth, leading to extensive toxic smoke emissions affecting the south-eastern suburbs. The incident commenced around 1.30pm when flames engulfed the Li-ion Energy facility, prompting a hazardous materials warning from authorities. The co-owner of the plant was taken to hospital, while local residents were advised to stay indoors due to the toxic fumes.

According to founder Justin Manton, the blaze ignited near crates containing lithium batteries, although he believed the batteries themselves did not trigger the fire. The situation escalated rapidly, resulting in substantial damage estimated at over $7 million, including the loss of goods and structural damage to the building. Fire and Emergency Services WA reported the presence of approximately 80 tonnes of solid-state batteries on-site.

The fire underscored the dangers associated with battery fires, a topic the owners had previously discussed prior to this devastating incident. Manton expressed shock and disappointment at the occurrence, stating, “One of the things we just try to avoid the most is fires… to have it happen here is disappointing and a bit tragic.”

Response teams worked diligently to control the fire and continued to manage the situation into the evening. The scene showcased severe damage, with the collapsed roof and walls of the workshop highlighting the scale of destruction. As efforts to bring the situation under control progressed, the precise cause of the fire remained undetermined, but it served as a sobering reminder of the risks connected to battery storage and handling.

Local residents continued to receive safety updates, with officials urging them to remain vigilant until the situation was entirely resolved. For now, recovery and investigations are likely to take considerable time as the community comes to terms with the aftermath of this incident.
