Shane Lowry made history at the Masters by achieving his second career hole-in-one during the third round at Augusta National, becoming the first player to record two aces in the tournament’s history. His remarkable shot came on the sixth hole, where he struck a 7-iron from 190 yards, watching the ball bounce thrice before landing in the hole. This ace echoed his previous hole-in-one at the Masters, which he accomplished on the 16th hole during the final round in 2016. Remarkably, this was also Lowry’s second hole-in-one in consecutive events, having aced the second hole at the Houston Open just prior.
Lowry’s achievement marked the first hole-in-one at the Masters since Stewart Cink’s in 2022, and it was only the seventh ace ever recorded on the challenging sixth hole, the last being Corey Conners’ in 2021. Players who score a hole-in-one during the Masters are awarded a crystal bowl, further adding to the significance of the accomplishment.
Alongside his two aces at Augusta, Lowry has also recorded unforgettable shots at the 17th hole of TPC Sawgrass and Pebble Beach’s seventh hole. Expressing his astonishment after making the ace, Lowry said, “You don’t ever expect to make a hole-in-one. Obviously, you’re in the hunt at the Masters, and you’re making a hole-in-one—it’s pretty cool.”
After his round, Lowry stood at -9, positioned in fourth place, trailing co-leaders Rory McIlroy and Cameron Young, who were at -11. McIlroy, who began the day with a significant lead, faced difficulties, shooting a 73, while Young put on an impressive performance with a 65. Australia’s Jason Day surged up the leaderboard to sit equal fifth at -8.
The tension increased at the Masters as several players, including the world’s number one, Scottie Scheffler, who started the day 12 shots behind but shot a brilliant 65, joined the mix. Day remains optimistic about his performance, feeling the pressure lies with the leaders. He expressed his strategy to close the gap as he heads into the final round, stating, “If I can get myself around the lead on the back side, I’ll be very pleased.” The final round promises to be an exciting showdown as multiple players remain in contention for the coveted green jacket.
