Andrew Johns has suggested that the Melbourne Storm needs to transform their approach following a troubling streak of four consecutive losses. The team suffered a significant defeat against the Warriors, with a score of 38-14, marking New Zealand’s largest victory over the Storm. This latest loss comes on the heels of an equally disheartening performance where they conceded a staggering 50 points against the Penrith Panthers.
Commentators, including Brad Fittler, have been critical of the Storm’s defensive capabilities, labelling it as “terrible.” Club legend Billy Slater echoed these sentiments, highlighting a concerning “lack of trust and connection” within the squad. Slater observed that players often miss their marks and react impulsively, leading to compounding defensive errors.
The impact of recent retirements and injuries has further weakened the team. Key players, such as Ryan Papenhuyzen and Nelson Asofa-Solomona, are no longer on the roster, and Eli Katoa’s season has ended due to a series of head injuries. Tui Kamikamica’s absence, after recent health issues, leaves the bench lacking in strength. Slater noted that Kamikamica’s return remains uncertain, intensifying the team’s struggles.
Johns believes that the absence of Asofa-Solomona’s powerful presence off the bench is felt, particularly as many of the current back-rowers lack significant first-grade experience. This inexperience came to light when Joe Chan was reprimanded by coach Craig Bellamy at half-time against the Warriors and subsequently substituted.
Johns emphasised the urgent need for the Storm to undergo substantial changes, both in personnel and tactical execution. Slater added that beyond player changes, a shift in “actions and attitudes” is critical. He pointed out that the squad contains talent that should enable better performances than what has been observed recently.
Acknowledging the dire situation, Bellamy expressed a commitment to instigate changes, suggesting the need for a reassessment of strategies that have characterised the last several seasons. With their recent performances being considerably disappointing, the Storm is hoping to identify and address the root causes of their struggles as they look to turn their season around.
