In a landmark achievement for Toyota, Ryan Wood clinched the brand’s first victory in the Supercars series during its third race since entering the competition. The race took place at the Taupo circuit in New Zealand, where Wood started from pole position. After making his second and final pit stop, he found himself behind his teammate Chaz Mostert but held a crucial tyre advantage.

Initially frustrated for losing the lead to the defending champion, Wood efficiently utilised his superior tyres to close the gap and ultimately overtake Mostert, leading him to an unchallenged win. This victory is significant as it marks the first time since May 2018 that a manufacturer other than Ford or General Motors has triumphed in a Supercars race, and it sets a record for how quickly a new manufacturer has secured a win in the series.

Commentator Richard Craill highlighted the pride the local community feels for Wood, who hails from Wellington, calling it an “enormous moment.” Wood crossed the finish line more than three seconds ahead of Broc Feeney, while Mostert completed the podium in third place, signifying Toyota’s first double-podium finish.

A visibly emotional Wood expressed his pride in the team’s achievement, stating, “To win in our third round is pretty special. This is incredible. I can’t believe it,” adding how much it meant to celebrate this victory at home in front of supporters.

Toyota debuted the Supra model earlier this year at Sydney Motorsport Park, and since then, it has proven competitive. Wood previously secured the brand’s first podium at the Australian Grand Prix before this win at Taupo.

Celebrating the win, former commentator Neil Crompton, who played a crucial role in bringing Toyota into Supercars, expressed his elation as he celebrated with the Walkinshaw team. Crompton’s journey had its challenges, including a battle with cancer, but he remained determined to make significant contributions to the sport.

Due to inclement weather, the next race weekend has been rescheduled for next Friday at the Ruapuna circuit near Christchurch. This victory not only solidifies Toyota’s presence in Supercars but also showcases Ryan Wood’s rising potential as a driver to watch.
