In a recent match, Broncos coach Michael Maguire expressed his bewilderment over a controversial decision made by the Bunker concerning Gehamat Shibasaki. The incident occurred with 16 minutes remaining in the game, during which the Broncos were leading the Cowboys 34-24 after Brendan Piakura had scored a try. This try was disallowed when Shibasaki was penalised for allegedly obstructing Tom Chester, who had failed to catch a dropped kick.

Maguire labelled the ruling as "bizarre," particularly as he felt Chester had a clear view of the ball, indicating that he should have been able to catch it. During the broadcast, former players Johnathan Thurston and Cameron Smith also questioned the decision, suggesting that it was merely a dropped ball and not an obstruction.

In a post-match conference, Maguire elaborated on his surprise, stating, “As outside backs, we practise to catch the ball. I saw Gem there and he wasn’t near Chester when he was catching it; in fact, he was further away.” He called for consistency in officiating decisions, emphasising the need for clearer guidelines if such rulings were to become standard practice in the game.

Former player Paul Gallen echoed Maguire’s sentiments on Nine’s Friday Night Footy, branding the decision a "very poor" one. He argued that it was evident Chester dropped the ball and that Shibasaki had not impeded his line of sight at any point.

The match also saw another contentious moment when Broncos player Cory Paix was forced off for a head injury assessment (HIA), which was classified as category one by an independent doctor. His substitute, Blake Mozer, left the field shortly after with a suspected fractured jaw. Despite showing signs of injury, Mozer was classified as having a category two concussion, raising further questions for Maguire, especially as Paix believed he was fit to return to play.

Maguire remarked, “That in itself is something we’ll have to review… he ran off and was ready to run back out again,” showing his confusion regarding the assessment. He acknowledged the serious nature of Mozer’s potential jaw injury as a separate concern.

Overall, the match underscored the controversial nature of officiating in rugby league, particularly concerning the interpretation of obstructive play and player safety protocols. Maguire’s remarks reflect a growing frustration within the sport about the consistency and clarity of officiating decisions.
