A senior Democrat in Congress has formally requested that Donald Trump undergo a cognitive assessment, following concerns regarding his mental acuity. Representative Jamie Raskin articulated that numerous specialists have raised alarms regarding potential signs of dementia and cognitive degradation shown by the former president.
Raskin pointed to recent instances where Trump’s public comments appear increasingly erratic and threatening, expressing alarm that this pattern could indicate a significant decline in his mental fitness to hold office. He emphasised the necessity for a thorough cognitive evaluation, with results to be disclosed to Congress for transparency.
The situation has prompted intense scrutiny, with Raskin referencing Trump’s erratic statements, even quoting a particularly inflammatory remark the ex-president made about opening up the Strait. He also discussed Trump’s struggle while navigating the White House stairs as indicative of his deteriorating condition.
Raskin, who serves as the ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee, noted that concerns about the cognitive abilities of sitting presidents have been a bipartisan issue; Trump is now at the same age Biden was facing similar questions during his presidency.
In response to Raskin’s call for a cognitive test, a spokesperson for the White House dismissed his concerns, labelling him as lacking substance. They asserted that Trump’s energy and mental sharpness stood in stark contrast to Biden’s perceived decline during his own presidency.
As discussions around the 25th Amendment, which facilitates the removal of a president deemed unfit for office, intensify, critics have openly questioned Trump’s viability in his role. Notably, Raskin expressed incredulity at Trump’s behaviour, likening him to a “comic book supervillain.” Despite the uproar, Trump has previously stated that he has completed cognitive tests, claiming satisfactory results.
Raskin’s prominence rose during significant political events, including Trump’s second impeachment and the January 6 investigations, highlighting his position as a leading voice in ongoing evaluations of the former president’s capabilities.
