In Queensland’s southeast, a group of vigilantes took drastic action to reclaim their stolen ute, resorting to physical damage of their own vehicle. The ute was originally swiped from a worksite in Yeronga, prompting its owners to pursue the thief when they tracked the vehicle down to a street in Rochedale South, about three hours later.

As the thief attempted to escape, he inadvertently crashed the ute through the front fence of a local family home, owned by Danielle and Craig Mason. CCTV footage captured the owners confronting the thief by ramming their ute before attacking it with baseball bats in a desperate effort to reclaim their property. One of the men can be heard yelling, “That’s my car! He stole our car!” as they smashed the vehicle’s doors, mirrors, and windows.

The chaotic incident lasted roughly three minutes, during which the thief managed to get away but not before causing damage not only to the ute but also to the Masons’ property. Chris Mason expressed concerns about how close his son came to being harmed, noting that had the incident occurred just hours earlier, his child could have been in the line of danger.

Despite the emotional toll of the theft, the Mason family voiced their frustration more towards the vigilantes than the thief himself. Danielle Mason stated, “I was mostly angry about the vigilantes’ chase, because I think that that’s what created heaps more chaos and violence and damage than the guy stealing the car.” She emphasised that while the situation is understandably infuriating, taking matters into their own hands is not the solution, suggesting that these issues should be left for the police to handle.

Meanwhile, authorities continue their search for the thief, but the fallout from the vigilante response has sparked a conversation about justice and the appropriate measures individuals should take when faced with crime. The Masons hope for a resolution, advocating for reliance on law enforcement rather than resorting to self-directed action.
