The Australian War Memorial has announced its commitment to provide a comprehensive account of Australians’ experiences in war, particularly highlighting the complex narrative surrounding Ben Roberts-Smith. Despite facing a decade of scrutiny and legal challenges regarding Roberts-Smith’s actions during his service in Afghanistan—including five counts of murder war crimes—his uniforms and honours remain displayed in the Hall of Valour, a section dedicated to Victoria Cross recipients.

In recognition of the ongoing legal developments, which Roberts-Smith has consistently denied, the memorial has introduced a new panel that acknowledges his legal troubles while retaining the display of his achievements. “Roberts-Smith has been charged with five counts of war crime murder,” the panel states, while emphasising that the legal matter remains active. Matt Anderson, the memorial’s Director, affirmed their resolution to provide a full narrative, stating, “Whatever the truth is, whenever the truth is known, we will tell it,” urging that it’s vital to let justice unfold naturally.

The Australian War Memorial has resisted calls from the public and critics to remove Roberts-Smith’s tribute, citing its dedication to telling the complete story of Australia’s military history. As part of ongoing updates and enhancements to the memorial, new galleries featuring full-sized military vehicles have been unveiled in anticipation of the upcoming ANZAC Day commemoration, marking a significant addition to the institution’s efforts in educating visitors about the multifaceted history of Australian servicemen and women.

The memorial’s approach reflects a desire to balance honouring military service while simultaneously acknowledging the complexities that may arise from individual actions during war, as it seeks to fulfil its role as the custodian of national stories and legacies connected to Australia’s conflicts.
