A tragic incident occurred on Sunday, April 5, at approximately 5:50 am near Barkly Homestead, located in the Avon Downs district. Police were alerted to a situation involving a woman who was reportedly unresponsive after the vehicle she was in collided with a kangaroo. Emergency services pronounced the 27-year-old woman dead at the scene. Following the incident, a 33-year-old man was apprehended by the authorities.

It has been reported that the deceased and the man who was arrested were in a relationship. The police allege that they had been parked in a dark-coloured Jeep Cherokee at the junction of the Barkly and Tablelands Highways during the early hours of that day, specifically between 1:30 am and 5:30 am.

Investigators believe the pair had travelled from Gympie, Queensland, to the Barkly Homestead during the days leading up to the incident, passing through several locations including Ban Ban Springs, Emerald, Winton, Cloncurry, Mt Isa, and Camooweal along the way.

In light of this event, authorities are actively seeking information from the public, particularly from motorists who might have been in the vicinity around the time of the incident. They are specifically looking for any dashcam footage that could assist in the investigation. Individuals who have seen the Jeep or who possess relevant information are encouraged to reach out to the police or to provide an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000.

As the investigation unfolds, the man remains in custody as police continue their inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the case.
