Phil Gould has shared promising news with Bulldogs supporters, revealing that the talented Bailey Hayward is set to extend his contract with the club. Hayward has proven himself to be a pivotal player for Canterbury since making his NRL debut last season. Known for his versatility, he has stepped up in various roles off the bench.
As he is due to be off-contract at the end of this season, Hayward will take on the five-eighth position in round three while the injured Matt Burton recovers from a month-long setback. In a recent episode of Wide World of Sports’ Six Tackles With Gus, the Bulldogs’ general manager confirmed Hayward’s impending extension, highlighting his adaptability and importance to the team.
Originally coming up through the lower grades as a playmaker, Hayward has adapted to a bench hooker role, racking up 22 appearances to date. His flexible skill set will be crucial for coach Cameron Ciraldo’s game strategy in the upcoming weeks, especially with Viliame Kikau also sidelined due to a knee injury.
Gould acknowledged the challenges ahead for the Bulldogs, noting that the injuries to key players like Kikau and Burton pose a significant test for the team’s depth. With the absence of other players like Jacob Kiraz and Sam Hughes, who have yet to play this year, this situation will test the Bulldogs’ strength and resilience over the next few rounds.
Currently, the Bulldogs have had a strong start to the 2025 season, winning both of their initial games, and will face Parramatta on Sunday.
