Brandon Smith has completed his transfer to the South Sydney Rabbitohs, marking a new chapter for the player after his time with the Sydney Roosters. According to Danny Weidler from 9News Sydney, the 28-year-old has signed a two-year contract with the Bunnies, and an official announcement is anticipated soon. Smith is expected to discuss his move on his podcast with James Graham.
Having joined the Roosters in 2023 on a lucrative deal, Smith’s performance was hindered by injuries and inconsistencies. Currently, he is recovering from an ACL injury, with a projected return slated for June. As a former premiership winner with the Melbourne Storm, there are still uncertainties regarding his best position within the Rabbitohs’ lineup.
The Rabbitohs recently let go of veteran hooker Damien Cook, with Peter Mamouzelos taking on the starting No.9 role at the beginning of the season. Other players, Siliva Havili and Jayden Sullivan, have also filled in as utilities, yet neither is contracted beyond 2026.
Smith’s previous relationship with coach Wayne Bennett stems from their time spent together with the Kiwis. The player almost joined the Dolphins but ultimately withdrew from the agreement, which left a lasting impression on Bennett. In a recent podcast episode, Smith acknowledged this rocky history, expressing his hope for a fresh start with the coach. “I am stoked he is interested in me,” Smith stated, reflecting on his initial commitment to Redcliffe. “Hopefully, he has forgiven me for that.”
As of now, both the Rabbitohs and the Roosters have yet to officially confirm the transfer. Notably, the Roosters may choose not to issue a statement as Smith was already unsigned for the upcoming season.
