A reward of $1 million has been announced for information regarding the suspicious death of Harmony Bryant, a 26-year-old woman found critically injured in bushland at Bonny Hills, near Port Macquarie, New South Wales, in 2003. Bryant suffered severe burns covering 60% of her body, alongside a broken pelvis and multiple fractures. Despite receiving treatment for over a month in hospital, she succumbed to her injuries on September 19, 2003.
The circumstances surrounding her injuries are alarming, with evidence suggesting that Bryant may have fallen from a nearby cliff and was subsequently assisted back to her car by an unknown individual. Notably, her vehicle, a Hyundai Excel, was discovered on fire approximately 200 metres from the road. The day before her tragic incident, Bryant had booked accommodation for two at the Mid Pacific Caravan Park, but the identity of the second person remains a mystery despite multiple appeals for information.
Minister for Police and Counter-terrorism Yasmin Catley has stated that the reward aims to motivate anyone with longstanding knowledge about the case to step forward. As the investigation stretches over two decades, the police hope that even the smallest detail could provide the crucial evidence needed to resolve the case.
Originally handled by the Mid North Coast detectives, the investigation was transferred to Strike Force Behl of the Homicide Squad in 2007. A 2011 coronial inquest concluded that Bryant died from her injuries, inflicted by unknown individuals, and, to date, no charges have been filed in connection with her death. Detective Superintendent Joe Doueihi, head of the Homicide Squad, affirmed that investigations confirmed Bryant was not alone during the incident and expressed hope that the monetary incentive would lead to a breakthrough, providing closure for Bryant’s family.
Anyone with relevant information is urged to reach out to Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000. Despite the time that has passed since Harmony Bryant’s tragic death, authorities stress the importance of public assistance in solving this long-standing mystery.
